Religious Education

Rusthall St Paul’s is distinctive in character as a Church of England Primary School (RE lessons and collective worship reflect this).

At Rusthall St Paul’s, we want our pupils to develop an awareness of and respect for the beliefs and feelings of those within the school and the wider local and international communities. We strive for our pupils to explore and reflect on others' experiences, along with their own ideas, to become individuals with a concern for the world around them.  At Rusthall St Paul’s, we want our pupils to be sensitive to the attitudes of others and have a moral and social responsibility for the world.

Through spoken language, we aim for our pupils to be enquiring, debating and questioning at all times in RE; we ensure that pupils do this in a respectful manner.  We make it very clear that there are never any right or wrong answers and all contributions are valued equally.  We feel that this models the attitudes that we want our pupils to have in the wider world around them.

In order to teach Religious Education, we follow the Kent Syllabus incorporating Understanding Christianity and the Diocesan units on Other faiths.  The Understanding Christianity units cover eight core concepts that sit at the heart of the Christian faith.  The progression within units ensures that pupils are able to understand the Christian text, recognise the impact upon the lives of Christians and then make connections to their own lives.  In addition, there is a clear progression through the teaching of the different concepts across all year groups (see Diocesan overview).  Through teaching the units about other faiths, the aim is for pupils to develop an understanding and respect for people of other cultures and faiths and then to transfer this into their day-to-day lives.
